On the last Friday of every month, our Talentos studio is converted into Café Encuentros to host the Tertulia. This event - for people older than 15 years of age - is one of Raíces' most popular programs, which presents monthly lectures and discussions on cultural topics. At the end of each tertulia, we open the microphone to any individual or group who would like to share their talents in music, poetry, dance, etc. The Tertulia also serves as the opening night for our art exhibits which rotate every 2 months January-November.
We call this cultural encounter in the café atmosphere, a retreat for the soul. Please be aware that most of the speaking is in Spanish, but we do have people available who can interpret in English. Admission $5.00. Come share this experience!
This Month's Tertulia: Friday, July 30, 2010 at 7:00pm
In July, Raíces' Tertulia will revolve on the history and culture of Sephardic Jews. The discussion will be prepared by Board President Monica Rodrigo and Vivian Isaak. Historian Laura Granda Mateu will supplement the discussion with the historical context of Spain at the time of the expulsion. We will also hear the enchanting music from "A Sephardic Life" (Michael White, 1986) performed live by classical guitarist Michael Simmons.
On the same night, Raíces will celebrate the opening of the new exhibit that combinesthe works of two self-taught women artists: Suelene "Sue" Rebouças and Alicia Dominguez.
The collection "The Arts of Sue Rebouças" features the paintings and photographs of Rebouças, who comes to us from Bahia, Brazil. Besides visiting the U.S., she has traveled all around the world, and those travels are usually the subject of her artwork. The exhibit will also feature the Mexican photographer, Alicia Dominguez, with a collection of her works entitled "Universal Conscience."
Dominguez is an activist who supports immigrant youth in her community and is especially fighting in favor of the Dream Act. Her photographs express her reflections on life and focus on people, nature and abstract images. At the Tertulia, you will have the opportunity to view the exhibit and also meet both of the artists.
This dual exhibit will be on display at the Talentos Studio from July 30 - September 17, 2010.

Last Month's Tertulia: Friday, June 25, 2010, 7:00pm
In June we watched documentaries made by local Latin American immigrants about their own lives with a focus on culture. These short documentaries were made by adults and youth in South Philadelphia under the guidance of JUNTOS. Representatives from JUNTOS and the filmmakers themselves were be present to discuss the process of making their documentaries and the subject of their films. Of course, there was lots of interesting discussion, and we the evening concluded with the customary open mic session!

Now on exhibit, through July 23,2010: "Silent Conversations" a collaboration by the mother-daughter pair from Venezuela, abstract painter Susana Amundaráin (photo left, by Vanessa Briceño) and portrait photographer Vanessa Briceño (photo right, by Karen McLoughin).
